Seas of Grease is a debut, self-titled and deeply personal album. The solo producer composes with an emotional and experimental approach to the cinematic sci-fi sound. The album toggles naturally between danceable rhythms and cinematic ambience, forming a trajectory that speaks of hope as well as defeat. Seas of Grease employs very clean electronic production to blend obscured textures, melancholic synths, and agoraphobic atmospheres into an incredibly intense forty-five minute sensory experience. The ideal way to enjoy the album is alone in your home, or under the night sky by the beach with your headphones, allowing yourself to feel every deeply personal second as if it were your own.
Regarding the unconventional song titling, Seas of Grease recounts:
‘The majority of the tracks were entitled “Undisclosed” followed by a number, because I believed that track titles betrayed the artist’s motivations behind each song. I never really shared my personal feelings with anyone - I kept my troubling thoughts to myself. By denying listeners the insight I could simulate the distance that I kept with others in life, so that my music could be an accurate expression of me, artistically. This depersonalization has the added benefit of allowing the audience to project their own feelings onto the music, without all the preconceived ideas that a track title may bring. This way, I give them the opportunity to connect with it on a deeper level, as if the songs were their own.’
Alex of Seas of Grease is currently based in Melbourne, Australia. This debut album was conceived during an unideal mental state at the start of 2014, which stunted the progress of the work until 2018, when its completion was thankfully enabled by his recovery.
